Massage Therapy

Guided imagery is a powerful tool for helping to break habitual worry patterns and tapping the body's innate healing abilities. Offering relief for stress, insomnia, back pain, anxiety, and post-operative healing, to name just a few conditions, guided imagery also opens the door for deep, therapeutic relaxation. Combined with massage, great things can happen.

Massage therapy has become an important part of general health care for many people living in today's stressful world! Traditional healthcare systems throughout the world recognize that therapeutic massage can play an important role in treating illness or chronic ailments, and contribute to a higher sense of general well-being! And with ever-expanding research on the beneficial effects of massage, more professionals are advising patients to include therapeutic massage in their health care treatment plans. Physicians, chiropractors and physiotherapists are recommending more patients receive massages for certain health conditions, while many employers and health insurance plans support the use of registered massage therapists.

Massage therapy is a practice that dates back thousands of years. There are many types of massage therapy; all involve manipulating the muscles and other soft tissues of the body. In the United States, massage therapy is sometimes part of conventional medicine. In other instances, it is part of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). This Backgrounder provides a general overview of massage therapy used as CAM and suggests some resources you can use to learn more.

Living with chronic pain is exhausting. It gradually wears on a person until there is simply no energy left to do something about it. We know that getting a massage or taking a vacation or even getting in for a regular check up with the doctor would be really good for us. But do we schedule that appointment? No. Life is just too busy, especially if we are busy caring for children, parents, or managing a big project. We put ourselves last on the list of caretaking duties. We get tired, irritable, just downright unhappy. But what if you knew that your happiness, or lack thereof, affected everyone around you? Well, it does. In fact, not only does it affect those around you, but also those around them, and those around them. Happiness seems to spread like a contagion and researchers repeatedly find clusters of happy and unhappy people: clusters of happy and unhappy people are visible in the network, and the relationship between people’s happiness extends up to three degrees of separation (for example, to the friends of one’s friends’ friends). People who are surrounded by many happy people and those who are central in the network are more likely to become happy in the future.

Stone Massage

The stones are used in two ways during the massage. One is to impart heat onto the body by laying stones under the client with a layer of fabric between the client and stone (a sheet or towel) and/or on top of the client, again upon a towel. Stone layout typically will be along both sides of the spine, or along the chakra centers on top and baseball sized stones would be placed in the hands. While these layout stones are delivering concentrated centers of heat, the therapist is simultaneously massaging the client with oiled, heated stones held in the palm of the hand with firm strokes along the muscles of the legs, arms, and torso areas. An authentic hot stone massage is not simply the "gliding" of heated stones lightly upon the surface of the skin, but rather the stones are used as tools to deliver effective tissue and muscle massage at a pressure level comfortable to the client. The client can request light, medium or deep pressure, which is the beauty of the hot stone massage technique. It can be customized in an instant to the request of the client. The hardness of the stones makes for a deep tissue massage and is easy on the joints of the therapist's hands. The heat from the stones relaxes muscles and increases the blood flow to the area being worked on which is said to further accelerates the healing process. This increase in circulation and the relaxation of the muscles is also claimed to aid in mental relaxation. Stones need to be kept heated in clean, sanitized water between 120 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit (about 50°C). Typically, gloves, tools, or mesh bags are used in removing stones from the hot water for sanitary reasons since hot water promotes the growth of bacteria. Alternatively, water temperatures kept too low may allow the proliferation of bacteria, algae, and mold, especially if the water has not been changed. Ideally the water should be changed for every round of sessions the therapist performs, the stone should be thoroughly cleaned and dried between patients. Your therapist or practitioner should have attended an intensive course over a period of a few days, with a resultant qualification. While the length of time the practitioner has spent being trained can be important; in general a recognised qualification from a reputable practical training source is preferred.

Medical Massage

Medical Massage is outcome-based massage. It is primarily the application of specific treatment protocols targeted to the specific problem(s) the patient presents with physician's diagnosis and administered after a thorough assessment/evaluation by the medical massage therapist. Until 1997 "Medical Massage" was referred to as "Massage Therapy". Ever since 1997 the term "medical massage" has been gaining in popularity. The term was created in america by Pete Spairring Owner of Cedar River Medical Massage(1997), (CedarRiverMedicalMassage.com)[citation needed]. He created the term with the intent of lifting massage therapy to a higher standard and improve outcomes for patients. He also had the intent of making it very easy for patients to identify that a business did massage as a treatment, and not just for relaxation. Relaxation massage does have many medical benefits but should not be confused with medical massage unless it is prescribed for stress relief. Until a specific symptom is treated with a specific set of procedures to bring about a specific outcome then massage it is not "medical massage". The American Medical Massage Association (1998) and The United States Medical Massage Association (1999)came on the scene with similar goals of lifting the professions to higher standards and intern giving patients a better outcome. The AMMA has done a great job of working with the standard medical comunity and bringing massage therapy into the mainstream they have done this through a board of advisors that include massage therapists, physicians, chiropractors etc...

Wikipedia

Massage

Massage is the manipulation of superficial layers of muscle and connective tissue to enhance the function and promote relaxation and well-being. The word comes from the French massage "friction of kneading", or from Arabic massa meaning "to touch, feel or handle" or from Latin massa meaning "mass, dough". In distinction the ancient Greek word for massage was anatripsis, and the Latin was frictio.

Massage involves acting on and manipulating the body with pressure – structured, unstructured, stationary, or moving – tension, motion, or vibration, done manually or with mechanical aids. Target tissues may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin, joints, or other connective tissue, as well as lymphatic vessels, or organs of the gastrointestinal system. Massage can be applied with the hands, fingers, elbows, knees, forearm, and feet. There are over eighty different recognized massage modalities. The most cited reasons for introducing massage as therapy have been client demand and perceived clinical effectiveness.

In professional settings massage involves the client being treated while lying on a massage table, sitting in a massage chair, or lying on a mat on the floor. The massage subject may be fully or partly unclothed. Parts of the body may be covered with towels or sheets.
